Forget the platitudes – 10 REAL ways to dramatically improve your life

Posted by Tarah Carlow on April 27, 2016

Yes, for real. I am in total love with this article. Maybe it’s just where I am in my life or it caught me at a soft moment while I am cruising currently at 33,000 feet. BUT, whatever the reason, if I could marry this article I would. Seriously – we are at true love.

Have I piqued your interest? I hope so. I think particularly those of us that are in the independent broker dealer business are strung in a way that we are competitive and ambitious (sometimes to a fault) but also value quality of life in a heightened way. Isn’t that one of the reasons you chose independence to begin with?

In any event, I would scan through this article really quickly and then save it for when you actually have a few minutes to read it all. If you are in the right mindset, I think you will “feel it” like I do. And if your life is already perfect then la-tee-da to you (imagine a tongue sticking out face here).

If you are super impatient and just want the quick-hits, I have provided them below – otherwise, click here for the full article…..and prepare to fall in love with life even more.

  1. Define the “why” forget the “how”. Thank goodness, right? All those details.
  2. Invest in clothes that fit. We all know if you look good, you feel good. Stop trying to play it off like it doesn’t matter – it does!
  3. Meditate. Biggest game changer for me this year. I am now converted from a judger of meditators to a true believer.
  4. Use a stand up desk. No smart comment here.
  5. Take breaks from your electronics. The best thing about having surgery last year was not caring about a thing happening on my phone or laptop for about a week. I cannot begin to tell you the peace that this brought me and it was not as hard as I thought.
  6. Get up early. I’m not a huge fan, but aside from meditation, this has been the biggest game changer for me. I actually feel like I am taking control of my day.
  7. Read more. Just like they tell you in school – reading makes you smarter and challenges your brain. And again, electronic-free zone.
  8. Live in at least one other city. This could be hard for some in our stage of life, so hopefully most of us have done it once. If you have, the key is to use it as enrichment. Take away key ideas and feelings from those times. If you haven’t and you can’t, move on to #9. I didn’t like #8 anyway.
  9. Write. This is a good one. Just throw caution to the wind and do it. If it takes a glass of wine to loosen up enough to be authentic, that’s even better. Some of my best writing has happened at the neighborhood wine shop – I will not tell you which work I am referring to either.
  10. Allow yourself to be vulnerable. Yuck. But necessary to building true-blue relationships. I have found its not as bad as I thought.

So, now you have my summation of the article, but don’t forget to read the real deal by Chris Dessi, CEO at Silverback Social.

Here’s the link again if you don’t feel like scrolling back up.
