Be a Leader!

Posted by Prospera Financial on October 6, 2026

A lot of us picture leadership as a box on the org chart: a window office, a team that reports to you, a final word in the meeting. But the people who shape how a team works and feels often don’t have a manager title. They lead because of what they do. Leadership is a behavior, not a position.

A title gives you authority. It doesn’t give you influence. Authority means people have to listen to you. Influence means they want to. You earn influence through small, steady choices that show people they can trust you, rely on you, and learn from you. You don’t need permission to lead.

How do you show you are a leader? Here are a few ways to lead every day while putting some of Prospera’s 28 Core Fundamentals into action:

Nothing builds credibility faster than being the person who follows through. When you say you’ll do something, do it. When something slips, say so early and bring a plan. When a project goes wrong, don’t wait for someone else to fix it. #TakeOwnership

Informal leaders spend real energy on others. That can mean:

  • Welcoming a new colleague and showing them how things get done
  • Sharing a shortcut, a template, or something you learned the hard way
  • Giving specific credit in public
  • Offering honest, kind feedback when someone asks for it #LeadByExample

You don’t need direct reports to mentor someone. You just need to care whether they succeed.

Pointing out problems is easy. Leaders go one step further: “Here’s what I’m seeing, here’s why it matters, and here’s one idea for fixing it.” Even if your idea isn’t the one that gets picked, you’ve moved the conversation forward. Do it respectfully and with good intent. That takes courage, and people remember it. #BeCurious

Some of the most influential people in any room say the least. They ask good questions, they notice who hasn’t spoken yet, and they make sure quieter voices get heard. Listening well shows respect, and people follow those who make them feel heard. #ListenGenerously

When deadlines tighten or plans change, teams look for someone who stays calm. You can be that person. Steady doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine. It means staying focused on what can be controlled and helping others do the same. #ThinkTeamFirst

Without a title, you can often move across teams more easily than a manager can. Use that. Build relationships outside your immediate group, share useful context, and introduce people who should be talking to each other. Being a connector is a quiet but powerful form of leadership. #InvestInRelationships

Leaders stay curious. Ask for feedback, take on the stretch assignment, learn a skill that’s next to your role, and reflect on what’s working. Showing that you’re still learning gives others permission to do the same. #EmbraceGrowthAndChange

Leadership is built in the everyday moments, so look for opportunities to step up and make a difference.
