Systems for the New Year

Posted by Prospera Financial on December 12, 2023

As we head into a new year, we hear a lot about goals. Did we accomplish our goals this year? What are our goals for next year? Having goals is important, but focusing on creating systems will have a profound impact on our ability to achieve goals. As author James Clear says in the book Atomic Habits, “Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress.” [1]

Here are some ways in which systems influence our goal attainment:

Consistent Progress: Systems provide the framework for consistent progress toward our goals. When we establish systems that align with our objectives, we create a routine of action that propels us forward day by day. Consistency is key to achieving long-term goals, and systems ensure that we make regular, incremental progress, even when motivation wanes.

Automatic Behavior: Systems automate actions, reducing the mental effort required to initiate them. This automation is particularly valuable when pursuing challenging or long-term goals. When a behavior becomes habitual, it no longer relies solely on motivation or willpower to execute. Instead, it becomes a natural part of our routine, making it easier to take consistent action toward our goals.

Overcoming Procrastination: Procrastination can be a significant obstacle to goal achievement. However, systems can help overcome this tendency. By implementing systems that involve specific actions related to our goals, we reduce the opportunity for procrastination to take hold. When a behavior is habitual, we are more likely to engage in it without prolonged decision-making or delays.

Building Momentum: Systems help build momentum and overcome inertia. Getting started on a goal can sometimes be the most challenging part. However, once a system is established, it creates a momentum that carries us forward. As we consistently engage in the behavior associated with our goals, it becomes easier to continue and progress. Momentum can be a powerful force, driving us closer to our desired outcomes.

So, this year, instead of focusing only on goals, consider the systems that will support their achievement and consciously cultivate them.

Happy planning!
