At our CONNECT conference, we asked our Chairman’s Club advisors (top ten) what the secret was to their success. While there were many factors, the below were their most common thoughts:
Be Process Driven
Having a process for onboarding new clients, managing existing clients, managing investment strategies, and operating as a business is the key to an efficient and effective practice. One comment was, “Once we developed a process, our client service associate freed up 25% of her time, allowing us to grow in capacity and service.”
Build a Great Team
The key to building a highly successful business is having a great team. Hire right and make sure you have the right people in the right seats on the bus. Delegation is the key to that team dynamic. As an advisor, anything that anyone else can do should not be done by you.
Invest in Your Business
Each in this group of advisors felt strongly that it is necessary to invest in your business. You cannot be penny-wise and pound-foolish. Spend a percentage of your revenue to improve your systems and your client experience.
Work ON Your Business, Not Just IN Your Business
It is key to take time each week to analyze and evaluate your business. If you are simply working on tasks and reacting to clients, then you are spending your time as an employee. Be the owner and look at the bigger picture. Be brave to try new things.
Know Your Value and Be Able to Articulate It
This critical piece to success is knowing why you do what you do and being able to confidently articulate your value. Never apologize for your process, your recommendations, or your cost. Any prospect who balks at paying you is not a client you want.
Don’t Be Afraid to Make a Mistake
You are not going to be perfect nor should you expect that of yourself. If something goes wrong, own up to it, learn from it, and move forward with an adjustment. Inaction or paralysis will not lead to success.
